There’s No Room for Error in Court Interpreting

The legal system works to unravel the truth and serve justice. Good communication is key. Communication breaks down when there are language barriers between parties involved in a legal matter. Legal and court interpreting services are integral to ensure good communication between parties who speak different languages. When it comes to legal matters, language proficiency is essential to enable understanding, agreement and resolution. If you have legal matters to address in a foreign language, we can assist you with a mother-tongue interpreter experienced with legal matters. We can help ensure your points are heard in the language of the court to give you the best chance for a favourable outcome.

Even the smallest interpreting mistakes can have serious consequences when it comes to the courtroom or legal proceedings. A single misunderstanding or mispronunciation could change the outcome of a case, leading to incorrect rulings, unfair judgment, faulty legal advice, appeals that can take years to resolve, or even wrongful convictions.

With such high stakes in court proceedings, interpreters must take extreme care in their work. All interpretations must be exact and precise so that legal issues can be handled properly. This is only possible when they know what they’re doing. Legal and court interpreting is a complex task that requires specialised training and knowledge of the applicable legal system. Interpreters must therefore be qualified, experienced, familiar with cultural differences and legal customs, plus, dedicated to keeping abreast of legal terminology in both of their language pairs.

It’s also important to understand that legal interpreting involves more than just word-for-word translation. Court interpreters must be knowledgeable about the case, its specialist sector such as family matters, energy, shipping, commerce, medical, etc., and its legal elements. It is usual for interpreters to be provided with preparation material so they can understand who the parties are that will be speaking, familiarise themselves with any foreign names and understand the reason for the hearing. They must know in advance what court and jurisdiction they will be attending as they must be familiar with the specific court procedures. Our experienced professional interpreters follow court protocols and always present information in a transparent and impartial way.

What Do Court Interpreters Bring to the Table?

Court interpreters use their multilingual skills and knowledge of legal procedures and jargon to make communication possible in a legal setting. Knowing that people’s lives and livelihoods may depend on the quality of their interpretation, these experts translate every word of the discussion accurately.

When it comes to legal matters, you can’t rely on family members or people without proper qualifications to provide reliable interpreting. Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting are skills that take years of practice to perfect. Just because someone can speak or understand a language does not guarantee that they can interpret well. In a court environment where correct on-the-spot translation and interpreting of every word is crucial, it is important to rely on a professional interpreter to ensure a full and accurate translation. If information is missed out, misunderstanding or even conflicts may arise that could influence the outcome of the legal procedure.

Hence, it’s best for all parties involved to have a verified professional experienced court interpreter in all proceedings.

Types of Legal and Court Interpreting Services We Offer

1. Simultaneous Interpreting

This type of interpreting involves our expert legal interpreters listening and translating at the same time. For example, if a legal proceeding is in English and you speak a foreign language, simultaneous interpreting will enable you to understand what’s being said in real-time.

Simultaneous interpreting is performed by professionally trained and highly skilled experts with special headsets and microphone equipment in booths. Simultaneous interpreters work in pairs or in threes. One interpreter interprets and the second interpreter will take notes and be on hand to step in should the first interpreter start coughing or need a break. The third interpreter will be outside the booth having a break. Due to the intense level of this type of interpreting, simultaneous interpreters must rotate every 20-30 minutes.

2. Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreters translate and summarise a speech in short sections. They take notes while listening to the speaker and then interpret the respective portion of the discussion in the target audience’s language.

This type of interpreting is best suited for one-to-one meetings or legal proceedings involving a small group. In the case of mediations and arbitrations, the interpreter often has to translate both into and out of the target language. Only very highly skilled and experienced interpreters are able to undertake this type of interpreting work. It is important to schedule breaks in for the interpreter every 30 minutes.

3. Remote Teleconferencing and Video Interpreting

Our legal interpreters also provide remote services for global clients via telecon interviews and video conferencing. Their voice can be enabled for everyone or selected participants, as required.

Video interpreting is especially common in court hearings, testimony, witness statements, and strategy planning.
